RE: Campground help for Virginia

Be careful what you will settle for. I grew up in Vienna, which used to be 20 minutes from Leesburg. It's now about an hour from Leesburg. No, it didn't actually move. The traffic in that area is nuts. If you are going to camp close by, make sure it is west or southwest of Leesburg, not east or north.

RE: New to RV/trailers

My wife and I have been back and forth on this for 2 years. I wanted a Class A. She wanted a Class C or Travel Trailer. All this prior to niether of us ever going camping. When I was going through high dose chemo, I watched alot of High Def Discovery channel and decided that I wanted to see our country with DW and the kids. Started dreaming big while looking at Class A's. My brother has a nice class A, but it made my wife seasick. She had to sit in the front and watch the road. (I think it was because we went on a day trip in it through rolling hills of West VA and my brother drives like a nut).
We talked to lots of people and thought that we would need to get something the DW would feel comfortable driving. Class A was out. (I work on my laptop while we drive long distances). Class C looked good. We looked around. Too many choices.
Then we decided to start off with a popup to make sure the kids liked camping (and that we did too). Went camping with some great friends who have been RVing for years. We loved it, and so did the kids!
One pro with a Class C is that the kids are not confined to regular car seats. They can sit at the table and play games/ watch movies, etc. The downside with a class C is that it's another motor to take care of. If ylou don't use it alot (especially in winter) parts deteriorate.
Now that we know that our kids love camping, we decided to go with a quad bunk travel trailer. As opposed to motorhomes, this travel trailer gives the kids their own bedroom, while providing available bedding for other guests such as a grandmother or two. Much more room. AND, we can take the Yukon off for day trips while leaving the trailer at the campground.
Lots to conisder and I'm not really sure that there are any wrong decisions. Just different potential paths. Think about it carefully, but most importantly, have fun and enjoy your family.

RE: Leveling Jacks question

Warping the frame is a minor problem next to pulling the seams on the corners and roof loose and creating water leaks. Your dealer should have covered this when you picked up your camper.
1st- Level side to side using blocks under the low side tires and don't just block one tire on a tandum wheel system. (Camper still attached to TV at this point.) Once level side to side or close then...chock the wheels.
2nd- Remove from TV and use front jack to level camper from front to back. Once level "side to side" and "front to back" then --
3rd- Place blocks under stabilizers and crank down till snug. I use about one complete additional turn of the crank handle to sinch them tight (this does not lift that point on the camper more that 1/2").
Additionally you may need to tighten your stabilizers a little the next morning if the ground has settled under the blocks. I have also figured out from years of camping is stabilizer jacks work best if you don't extend them out to their max limit. Use more blocks to only have to lower them about half their max length or less.
Hope this helps!
Bonefish
Thanks Bonefish! You are probably right, the dealer will do the PDI and most likely cover this stuff when I pick it up. It sure helps to be educated before hand, so I know what to ask.
Thanks for these steps. Very useful and makes sense.

RE: Extension Mirrors

Do you really need extension mirrors? We are getting our first TT in a couple months. All I've ever towed is a popup camper and obviously didn't need them for that.

RE: Leveling Jacks question

I looked at camping world and it looks like you drive your RV onto these. So, these go under the tires only? Makes sense.

RE: Leveling Jacks question

Here's a question from a newbie. If you don't use these jacks for levelling, then how do you level your trailer? Is there such a thing as levelling jacks, or are you supposed to work only with the tires?
Thanks All

RE: Feds Urge Closure of Hurricane Trailers

We are ordering our first travel trailer and it will be here in 8 weeks. I saw this story today too and was a bit concerned about it. With 4 small kids, I have to worry - by law. From what I have read (today), it seems that the fumes can be taken care of by ventilating the trailer and using fans. Does that pretty much cover it?

RE: classyrv.com ?

I've got mine listed on Craigslist, RVTrader.com, RV.net free classifieds AND EBay. My EBay auction looks like it is going well. The dealer offered me 2400 as wholesale cost. I see them for sale for 4500. I put it on EBay with a 3300 reserve, starting bid of 1900. I already have one bidder and 28 watchers. As I understand it, that's when people will blow up the bid. With 3 days left on the auction, I'm feeling confident.
So, just sell it yourself the way I am.

RE: SUV Bashing

My HUMMER came with the machine gun turrett on top. That's utility.
The H2 is not a real Hummer.

The real Hummer interior.
The H1 does not fit 6 people. I have 4 kids. The H1 has 2 seats in the front and 2 seats in the back. My H2 has 6 seats. It's about as real as I'm ever gonna get.

RE: Toddlers sleeping in your RV? Where do you put them?

I have another option that may be worthwhile. If your roof is flat.....
:-) Just kidding. Actually, we are getting a bunkhouse Travel Trailer and we have 4 kids aged 4 - 10. I think the 9 and 10 year olds will be fine. We may just tie the 4 and 6 year old down to their bunks. Gotcha again..
I also like the idea of putting the table down and put the pnp on top of that. But, make sure it is sturdy.

RE: Camping with lightning?????

There is another thread on this topic. Click Here
But the main idea is to disconnect shore power so that you don't fry the fridge or other applicances/TV's etc.

RE: Trade-in or Sell it myself?

Well, I put it on eBay yesterday. RVTrader.com saturday. This websites free classifieds on saturday and craigslist as well. On eBay, I have no bids, but 13 'watchers". This was explained to me as someone who can monitor the auction in their portal and post bids at the last minute.
I might try displaying it along a road. I bought it 2 years ago from a friend in town. I found out about it because I drove past it on the road and stopped to read the sign.
scribeworx, thanks for all the advice. I've sold cars online before and worked the same way. It pays to be overly cautious.
Thanks so much everyone! I'm still looking forward to getting my new Rockwood 8317 in 7-9 weeks.

RE: I cannot believe the difference!

I never even considered replacing the factory hitch on my TV. I have a 2007 GMC Yukon Denali. I will be towing a 6000 lb TT. Should I get a new hitch? The dealer says I'll be fine with it.

RE: Trade-in or Sell it myself?

I have 8-10 weeks before my travel trailer will arrive. The dealer is offering me 2400. I see them for sale online between 4000 and 5000. I'm wondering if I should try rvtrader.com or even EBay?
